Away from the model race, researchers are publishing applied ML work on predicting cancer treatment response and generating synthetic transcriptomic data.

Researchers shared a study on "prediction of pathological complete response after chemoradiation for locally advanced rectal cancer using machine learning," per @JARC_JSCP. Predicting which patients will fully respond to chemoradiation is clinically significant — it could inform whether some patients avoid surgery entirely, and it's the kind of narrow, high-stakes prediction task where ML earns its keep.
