New Paper 'MetaRubric' Tackles the Hard Problem of Rewarding Models for Judgment

A fresh arXiv paper proposes learning reward functions for rubric-based reinforcement learning — an attempt to teach models to evaluate work the way a careful human grader would.

A new research paper, MetaRubric, proposes "Learning to Reward for Rubric-Based Reinforcement Learning," surfaced by @SciFi. The work targets one of the thorniest problems in training capable models: how to reward outputs for tasks where quality is a matter of judgment rather than a single correct answer. Rubric-based evaluation — grading against a structured set of criteria — is how humans assess open-ended work, and teaching a reward model to apply rubrics well is a step toward training models on messier, more realistic objectives.
