OpenAI Ships GPT-6 Astra, and the AGI Claims Arrive With It
OpenAI's new frontier model, trained on a massive NVIDIA Grace Blackwell cluster, is fueling viral demos of full video production and 3D rendering — and prompting insiders to declare the AGI era has begun.
OpenAI has released GPT-6 Astra, and within hours the discourse skipped past incremental benchmarks straight to the biggest claim in the field. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang posted that Astra was trained on roughly 100,000 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell NVLink72 systems, adding: "From ChatGPT to o1 to Astra in 4 years. AGI has arrived." It is worth remembering that Huang sells the hardware every one of these models runs on, so his enthusiasm is not disinterested. But the claim did not stay contained to vendors.
OpenAI president Greg Brockman was more measured but pointed in the same direction, writing that "we're now moving into the AGI era (whether you view it as this model, the last one, or the next one)." The hedge inside the parentheses is doing a lot of work — it is a claim structured to be unfalsifiable, applicable to whichever model you prefer. That is worth noting before anyone treats "AGI has arrived" as a settled technical fact rather than a framing.
