Anthropic Pushes Agents Into Physical Lab Hardware as DeepMind's Co-Scientist Starts Running Its Own Experiments
Two of the day's biggest threads point the same direction: AI agents are moving off the screen and into physical laboratory equipment, blurring the line between software assistant and autonomous researcher.
The most consequential thread running through Friday's AI coverage wasn't a chatbot benchmark — it was the steady migration of agents into physical hardware. According to a daily roundup from @marcopapa99, Anthropic is now pushing its agents into lab hardware, a move corroborated by @aidailyprimer, who reported that Anthropic has opened a preview of what it calls a "Model Hardware Standard." On its own, a hardware abstraction layer sounds like plumbing. In context, it's a declaration of intent: the company wants a standardized way for language models to actuate real-world instruments.
The parallel development came from Google DeepMind. Per @DreyXAI, DeepMind's AI Co-Scientist "now plans experiments, runs lab equipment" — a leap from suggesting hypotheses to executing them on physical apparatus. That is a categorically different risk and capability profile than a model that merely drafts a protocol for a human to run. When the same model designs the experiment and operates the pipette, the human moves from operator to supervisor.
