Commerce Lifts Export Controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, Reopening Kaggle Overnight

Anthropic says the Department of Commerce has cleared export restrictions on two of its flagship models, and access begins restoring today — a rare loosening in an era of tightening AI controls.

Anthropic announced Tuesday that it had received notice from the U.S. Department of Commerce lifting export controls on Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, with access restoration beginning the following day. The post from @AnthropicAI went viral almost immediately, drawing more than 51,000 likes — an unusual level of engagement for what is, on its face, a regulatory compliance notice. The reaction tells you something about how tightly access to these models had been throttled.

The practical consequences arrived fast. Kaggle's @MeganRisdal confirmed that the data science platform would be accessible again the next day, framing it plainly: "Kaggle is also legal now, too." That phrasing — the idea that a mainstream ML competition and dataset platform had effectively been off-limits — is the detail worth sitting with. Whatever the controls covered, their reach extended well beyond the models themselves into the everyday tooling that practitioners depend on.
