Identity Verification Startups Pitch Themselves as the Fix for Export-Controlled AI
At least one startup is already positioning citizenship verification as the missing infrastructure layer that could bring Fable 5 back online — but the legal and practical obstacles are immense.
Within hours of the Fable 5 shutdown, the scramble to build a workaround began. @RegenRene, founder of identity verification company Self, published an open letter to Dario Amodei arguing that the technology to gate AI model access by verified citizenship already exists. "At @selfxyz we've built the missing piece to make Anthropic compliant with the government's directive: a way to gate Fable 5... to verified US citizens," they wrote.
