Google Launches Gemini Spark, an Always-On AI Agent That Works While Your Devices Are Off
Announced at Google I/O 2026, Gemini Spark is a cloud-hosted personal agent that runs tasks autonomously 24/7 — no open browser, no active phone required. Trusted testers get access this week.
Google unveiled Gemini Spark at I/O 2026, a personal AI agent that operates continuously in the cloud, executing tasks even when a user's phone and laptop are powered down. As @joshwoodward announced, Spark is designed to "proactively manage tasks" and will begin rolling out to trusted testers this week. The product sits at the center of Google's newly aggressive push into agentic computing — a strategy that dominated virtually every segment of this year's I/O keynote.
The architectural premise is straightforward but significant: Spark runs server-side, not on-device. You issue a task — research a topic, monitor a data feed, coordinate a multi-step workflow — and Spark persists in Google's infrastructure, checking back with you only for major decision points. As @RoundtableSpace put it, "Give it a task and it runs autonomously." The implication is that Google wants to be the ambient operating system for your professional life, not just a tool you open and close.
