The AI coding market entered a new phase of open economic warfare on Wednesday. Sam Altman announced that OpenAI would offer any enterprise willing to trial Codex two full months of free usage, writing plainly that "codex is the best AI coding product and we want to make it easy to try". The @OpenAIDevs account amplified the pitch with a direct call to action: "Send this post to your CTO." It's a blunt, loss-leader move of the kind more commonly associated with cloud infrastructure sales than developer tools — and it signals how high the stakes have become.
The timing is no coincidence. Just hours earlier, Anthropic made its own aggressive play. @ClaudeDevs announced that Claude Code weekly usage limits would increase by 50% through July 13, effective immediately for all Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise users. The increase addresses one of the most persistent complaints from Claude Code power users: that rate limits forced them to ration their most productive tool. Two months of breathing room is a significant concession, and the timeline — through mid-July — suggests Anthropic is willing to absorb the cost through at least one full quarter.
