OpenAI Says GPT-5.5 Is Its Fastest-Growing Launch Ever as Codex Revenue Doubles in a Week
One week after launch, GPT-5.5 is generating API revenue at more than double the pace of any prior OpenAI release, while Codex — its agentic coding product — doubled its own revenue in under seven days. The numbers signal that enterprise demand for AI-native developer tools may be entering a new phase.
OpenAI marked the one-week anniversary of GPT-5.5 by disclosing metrics that, if accurate, represent a step change in how quickly frontier models convert to revenue. As @OpenAI announced, API revenue from GPT-5.5 is growing "more than 2x faster than any prior release," while Codex — the company's agentic coding environment — doubled its revenue in fewer than seven days on the strength of enterprise demand.
The Codex figures are arguably the more significant data point. Developer tools have historically been slow-burn businesses: GitHub Copilot took months to cross meaningful revenue thresholds, and even then Microsoft bundled it aggressively. For Codex to double revenue in a week suggests that large organizations are not just experimenting with agentic coding — they are deploying it into production pipelines at speed. OpenAI has been shipping features to accelerate that adoption, including a new workflow import tool that lets teams bring settings, plugins, agents, and project configurations into Codex with minimal friction, as @OpenAI detailed in a separate post.
