Amazon Commits Up to $25 Billion to Anthropic, Unlocking 5 Gigawatts of Compute for Claude
Amazon is making its largest-ever bet on a single AI company, pledging up to $25 billion in new investment and 5 gigawatts of compute capacity — enough to power a small city — to Anthropic's Claude models.
Amazon will invest an additional $5 billion in Anthropic immediately, with commitments for up to $20 billion more in the future, as @AnthropicAI announced Monday. The deal also secures up to 5 gigawatts of compute capacity for training and deploying Claude, with capacity beginning to come online this quarter and nearly 1 gigawatt expected by the end of 2026, according to @AnthropicAI. The total investment figure — reported at up to $25 billion by @WatcherGuru — makes this one of the largest single-company AI commitments ever disclosed.
To put 5 gigawatts in context: that's roughly the peak electricity consumption of a country like Denmark, or enough to power approximately 3.7 million American homes. It's also more than double what most estimates peg as the total compute capacity currently deployed across all frontier AI labs combined for training runs. The sheer scale signals that Anthropic is planning training runs and inference deployments that dwarf anything it — or most competitors — have attempted before.
