Google DeepMind Ships Gemma 4: Four Open Models, Apache 2.0, 256K Context, Runs on Your Laptop

The Gemma 4 family brings frontier-class reasoning, native tool use, and multimodal capabilities to open-source models that run on consumer hardware — the most aggressive open-weight release from Google yet.

Google DeepMind released Gemma 4 on Thursday, a family of four open-weight models that may represent the most capable set of locally-runnable AI models available under a permissive license. As @GoogleDeepMind announced: "Meet Gemma 4: our new family of open models you can run on your own hardware. Built for advanced reasoning and agentic workflows, under Apache 2.0."
